Yeah, that’s pretty much my take on it, too.

We have a few solar electric fence chargers and several hundred-watt solar panels that we can use to charge battery packs that then run our personal electronics and select kitchen appliances in the case of a power outage, as well as charge the batteries for our power tools (we use battery-powered drills, drivers, circular saw, chainsaw etc. pretty constantly).

We might eventually try for an off-grid permanent solar installation for the outdoor/communal kitchen building to keep our chest freezers running if the power goes out for a long time, but so far we have skated by and it hasn’t seemed worth it.

We might also consider a home biogas generator but we haven’t looked into it thoroughly—most of our focus so far has been on becoming less and less dependent on needing electricity at all. I’d say our chest freezers full of food (which save us an enormous amount of money) are probably the only thing I still worry about in terms of longer power outages. Although I must admit that I have relished going into air conditioned building during this pregnancy! Wallowing in the decadence of the declining empire, heh.
