Thank you!

Truth be told, we haven’t really had to deal much with modern child rearing rules and regulations, since this is our first child. People have definitely been a bit interfering during this pregnancy, but I’ve mostly been able to mitigate it by dealing with people who share my ideas (midwives instead of a mainstream OB/GYN, for instance) and nodding and smiling my way through conversations with the nosy/pushy but generally well-meaning and then doing what I want.

As a general practice, I’m a big believer in observing what actually happens and making small adjustments rather than becoming too attached to dogma and refusing to act until it’s too late. Baby hot, flushed, miserable, won’t sleep? I will run the fan or A/C (there is an old window unit in our room); this is not the hill I want to die on. But we generally don’t climate-control our spaces unless something particular is going on (we’ll cool the kitchen when we’re butchering, or we’ll turn on the window unit if guests are miserable, or we’ll heat the house if we’re worried about pipes freezing.) I’ve actually turned our window unit on a few times during this pregnancy when I woke up angry and pouring sweat in the middle of the night.

My loose plan is modified co-sleeping. I’m building a bed frame with a sort of three-sided crib attached, like a little sidecar, so the baby will be in a somewhat protected space but still accessible for night feedings/soothing/etc. without having to get up. The safe sleep seven seem pretty reasonable to me, and we’ll probably mostly follow that depending on how things go.
